The flower show goes on until Sunday so I wouldn't bother trying, you will just get stuck. The eels will be OK, there is flow through the trap keeping it cool.
We can get down Saturday on pushbikes. Pity we can't do evenings as that would be very easy.

I did turn around Dave. I doubt I'd have been there an hour later. I remember similar problems in a previous year although nowhere near as bad as this.

Patrick, Matthew & me met up this morning, caught 25 eels in the trap

It was very mucky, the big syphon was still going well, the small blue one had stopped, and no water coming down from the top of the pass even though the river level was high enough that there should have been.  We were prepared for this and brought a spanner and drain rods with us.

25 Eels

Results

Top of the pass before cleaning, blocked with twigs

Top of the pass after cleaning

Trap after cleaning

After cleaning there was still not much flow down the main chute so we removed some more sections, reached in - and pulled out handfuls of stinky mud with Zebra mussels and a few ordinary whelks mixed in.  We did this down most of the upper section.  The good thing about Molesey is the toilet facilities so you can scrub up afterwards, and the cafe.

Think thats 175 for the year so far which is pretty good, 327 last year so we will exceed that I think. The previous year looks execpetional, interesting as we build up a bigger picture

Dear Everyone,

We’re long overdue an update on what has been happening this year with the eels so apologies for that.

Early on in the season we heard via the Environment Agency that the glass eel migration had been a bit of a non-event in the River Severn, normally a reliable indicator of what we can expect out here , sure enough numbers of incoming elvers are pretty low in comparison to this time  last year at most sites.

With thanks to Chris Cockel for going through the data, these are the totals you have recorded as of July 2nd

Ash 6

Brent 289

Crane (started trapping on June 29th) 8

Hogsmill 6

Lea 43

Longford 162

Medway 258

Thames- Molesey 146

Thames- Teddington 1

Wandle 20

I’m really delighted to tell you also that a new site at Mogden Sewage Treatment Works on the Dukes River has joined the programme just in the last few days. With the help of London Wildlife Trust, the  River Crane, upstream of the Dukes River, was trapped  from 2011 to 2013 with not a single eel found. This gave us the evidence we needed to secure funding from the SITA trust to build the passes that we are now recording data from. It’s fantastic to see the project working the way it should with evidence based investment into improving eel passage. You’ll see from the table above that were already seeing eels come up into the Crane Catchment.

We’ve set the date of October 20th up at ZSL, London Zoo for this year’s forum. I hope that as many of you can make it as possible. Please forward this mail to your volunteers so everyone can get it in their diaries.

Many thanks as always to you all for your help.

All best, Joe

Mitten Crab recording project: http://mittencrabs.org.uk/

We've had a request from some scientists at Royal Holloway to collect mitten crabs for analysis.
So please don't stamp on them any more, they need to be collected alive as follows:

Put them in a bucket, containing damp newspaper, with a lid.
Leave the bucket in the shade somewhere near the lock where they can pick it up
When we have some, need let them know ASAP:

Dr David Morritt,
Email: d.morritt@rhul.ac.uk and CC: Luke.DAddiego.2013@live.rhul.ac.uk
Tel: 01784 443971

I'll see what we can do about a lidded bucket to leave at the lock (old tile adhesive bucket?)

I've got a spreadsheet which automatically updates the page on the website now,
http://www.rivertac.org/thames-eel-monitoring-2015/

Don't seem to have any sizes recorded for 21st June?
