both pipes were working, but the upper water level is a bit low, so not much of a flow from main pipe

Message from Joe

Just under eight weeks of monitoring left for this season- where has the time gone!

You’ve heard less from me this year than previous monitoring seasons as we’ve been flat out getting new passes up and running and securing funding for continuation of the work you are all contributing to – more on that at the forum. Speaking of the forum please can you let all volunteers helping with the monitoring know that this year we will be back at ZSL, London Zoo on October 20th. In addition to feedback on the season’s data presentations are being lined up from Thames Water and the Environment Agency. I’ll send out the registration link in a couple of weeks.

I’ve attached a paper published this month on the many challenges we face in our efforts to protect eel populations from further decline. The lead authors of the paper are both ZSL colleagues.

Today there were 3 eels: 100, 95, 90 and a stone loach which at first I thought was a baby barbel, but closer inspection and judicious application of the interweb identified it as a loach. Good flow through the trap still.

Nicola, Patrick, Dave and me met at the trap this sunny morning, obviously expecting a bumper haul. But river levels were right down - though the syphons were both working well so there was some flow through the trap the dowstream river was well below the tail entry point.
Then took the lid off and the trap had been fiddled with by someone, pipes were in the wrong bit and one was bridging the cone so would allow eels back out (albeit downstream) again.

No eels in trap but Dave got one in the box, 90mm.
3 live crabs and one shell, probably moulted by the biggest - a monster which jumped out at Patrick whilst cleaning the mud off the box - perhaps 8"/20cm or more across.

Photos...
