PostSubject: Rivers Week - River Wye (Bucks)   Tue Nov 19, 2013 6:42 pm

Spent the morning with a certain mad mollusc & EA Matt nailing bits of wood to a river bed:

They might still have one or two places on the other days this week, if anyone's interested:

http://www.chilternsaonb.org/chalk-streams/rivers-week.html

The Wye's an interesting little river - a chalk stream that rises in the Chilterns just abobve High Wycombe & flows into the Thames @ Bourne End.  Charles Rangeley-Wilson's recently written a book about it which I've just started reading [ http://tinyurl.com/kkouskm ] Much of the river's upper reaches are highly modified & a fair stretch of it is culverted under the town centre. Despite this & numerous pollution events over the years it has a good riverfly population as a brief kick sampling session we saw showed & although trout numbers are low due to poor fry survival rates (which hopefully this week's work will help to improve) - the two trout I saw were huge (by my standards), one must have been over 18".

Good work chaps, well done Smile
In my ignorance I think of the Wye as one of those perfect chalk streams but the upper reaches sound quite similar to the Crane in parts.
