FREE Practical Masterclass in River Habitat Enhancement

From Nancy Young (Colne Biodiversity Officer) & Rob Pearson (Colne Fisheries Officer)

We are very excited to invite you to a practical masterclass in river habitat enhancement. These will be hands-on training days run by the Wild Trout Trust which will teach the use of tools and techniques for habitat improvement and management, including the placement of large woody debris and deflectors. The masterclasses are aimed at anyone working on rivers, from fishery managers to conservation volunteers. The hope is that you will take away the knowledge and techniques to be able to replicate what you have learnt to improve rivers elsewhere.

There are seven, one day long masterclasses which are spread over six locations throughout the Colne catchment. They will take place between Wednesday 27 March and Friday 5 April:

  • Wednesday 27: River Wraysbury, Harmondsworth Moor (north west corner of Heathrow Airport)
  • Thursday 28: River Colne, Stockers Lake, Rickmansworth
  • Friday 29: River Colne, Merchant Taylor's School (between Rickmansworth and Watford)

  • Tuesday 2: River Ver, Drop Lane (west of Bricket Wood)
  • Wednesday 3: River Ver, Drop Lane (west of Bricket Wood)
  • Thursday 4: River Colne, Knutsford Playing fields, Watford
  • Friday 5: River Gade, Gadebridge Park, Hemel Hempstead

Last year the Wild Trout Trust ran one of these masterclasses on the River Chess which was hugely successful and a lot of fun! If you would like more details of this day please see the River Chess Association's website:

Equipment and materials will be provided, you will just need to wear suitable clothes and waders if you have them. More details will be sent round closer to the time.

If you are interested in attending one of the masterclasses, please let me know which dates you are available and if there is a specific day you would prefer, by Friday 15 February. We will try and accommodate your date preference if possible. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis (although some places will be reserved for local priority groups at certain sites), but with seven days available, we hope to be able to offer a place to everyone who wants to attend.

If you would like to come along to watch and listen, but don't want to participate in the practical aspects, that’s fine too! The restriction on numbers is mainly for people who will be getting into the river, so you are more than welcome to pop along and see how we are getting on throughout the day.

We really hope that you will take advantage of this great opportunity and I look forward to hearing from you. Please send this email to anyone who you think may be interested.
