Nice one, regretfully I couldn't make it.
Oli can you add some captions to your bug photos so we know you learned to identify them properly? Very Happy

Nice one for all the pics Oli. That bullhead with half swallowed fish was amazing.

Thanks to the EA Fisheries team we now have the training and the kit....we'll do the rest.

In a fortnight we've become the first people to monitor eel traps on the Thames and the first anglers to monitor Thames invertebrate life, all thanks to you lads volunteering.

In the background, we're looking at breeding fish species the EA don't for restocking depleted rivers, the River Crane restoration, habitat enhancement on the Abbey River, flow deflection and fish habitat creation on the Hogsmill, trout/ salmon traps on the Thames and a long list of other projects.

If you'd like to get involved please let us know as you would be very welcome Wink

What a brilliant day chaps, thanks for all making it.

Was a real eye opener as to what lives at the bottom of the river, throws a whole new light on what the fish are feeding on, in abundance. Some of those Mayfly were huge Shocked

Massive Thanks to the EA for funding the course and supplying the venue, also to Louis/June for teaching us all so well.

So now we kick of for real, I will be in touch about sampling sites so give them some thought. Idea to get two sites on the same day, eachmonth per team, if feasible. So conceivably we will have say 10 sites covered.

Thanks again folks and great pics Oli Smile

Hi Dave
re sites to look at.I have one in mind, The Colnebrook, the bit in I think Ferry Lane Wraysbury. It runs from where a small weir spills over for a short distance down to where it enters the Thames at Bell Weir.I used to fish it all the time in my teens but not sure who claims rights over it now????Would love it if someone can advise on this as would like to try it again. The river above the weir is Blenheim Angling, but not the bit below as i phoned them and asked. They don't know who looks after it either. This river especially at the weir end always fished well,i remember standing on a gravel bottom in my wadders so i think should fit our needs quite well for kick sampling. It's near to its end before running into the Thames so at this spot would show a good example as to this rivers state.
When i was young i do remember a big release of small fish.Almost certain they were small salmon, would love it if someone could remember or confirm this..These small fish were in the river from the weir to the Thames for ages and i remember the pike having a ball.
The other thought i had was The River Ash,i say this as i live in Ashford (Middx) myself. It never seems to get much of a mention, would be nice to know its current state as far as insect / fish life goes.Again if anyone has any comments on the Ash it would be good to hear them.I have been looking at the internet but didn't really see alot.
Colin/Mike

Your ears must've been burning Colin as I was mentioning to the lads this morning whether you'd cover the River Ash Smile

The spot on the Colne brook you mention would also be good I would've thought, as it's such a downstream spot.
