And what a fascinating 2 hours it was. Blimey, they have some fish over in Holland, both in terms of numbers and size. His best day out in a boat accounted for nearly 200 zander between him and his boat partner with fish in excess of 20 lbs. Some huge pike and asp to nearly a metre long. And best of all the police turn up immediately if someone is taking too many fish for the pot.

Agreed Neil a good evening of info about a different style of fishing than I'm used to definately, not sure I'd be brave enough to tackle those huge lakes in a little boat though

What technique do they use? I've seen footage of anglers essentially jigging in the massive lakes over there.

Jigging was the main method for the zander but, and he really emphasised this a lot, VERY SLOW jigging. He showed us a rod that was about 11ft long, light and very stiff, coupled with a small Shimano 2500 reel.

They hold the rod & reel almost like a pen, gripping the reel stem between thumb and forefinger. The rod tip is pointed at the water with the butt held high so that you look down the length of the rod. The lure is dropped to the bottom and then raised about 1 ft and lowered as slowly as possible.

Whilst this is going on the use 1 or 2 electric outboards to track the drop off. Bites tend to be very gentle and he said they miss a lot of takes as they are such delicate takes.

Although Keith doesn't fish for preds too often in the UK, its just not worth the effort compared to what he catches in Holland, he has used the same methods with success on the Thames and other English venues including Grafham and Rutland.

Fascinating Neil, I often wonder how exactly people come up with such specialised techniques, something that seems so obscure must only have come from trial and error of some kind.

On a related note a Czech guy I met on the bank last week showed me some expensive looking "micro-lures" he had that he said were very successful over in Czechoslovakia. They were tiny rubber/jelly things in different shapes, mainly very small crabs and tiny crayfish, almost larval size. He said they were deadly for perch and sometimes zander.

The rod was also wieghted at the end of the butt so balanced nicely when you held it in that way, seemed you could change weights to suit
