Public Meetings about the Thames

The PLA will again be holding a series of public meetings to discuss current and future matters related to the tidal Thames during 2012.

The first meeting will be held at London Rowing Club, Putney on 7th February. This meeting is principally aimed at matters affecting the river between Putney and Teddington, other meetings will be scheduled for matters downstream of Putney.

Our public meetings take a theme of ‘Your tidal Thames - today and tomorrow'. The 7th February meeting will be chaired by Port of London Authority (PLA) chief executive, Richard Everitt, with chief harbour master, David Phillips.

The meeting is open to anyone interested in the work and activities of the PLA on, or by, the tidal Thames. Amongst the matters under discussion will be our role and responsibilities, together with current and future activities on the river. There will be a full opportunity to raise any matters of concern and for general discussion on wider river and port issues.

Detailed arrangements for the meeting are as follows:

* Date: Tuesday 7 February 2012
* Venue: London Rowing Club, Embankment, Putney, London, SW15 1LB
* Start time: 6.30 pm
* Nearest public transport: Putney Bridge tube station and Putney mainline railway station.

Anyone interested in the work and activities of the PLA or developments on the tidal Thames in general is welcome to attend the meeting at 6.00 pm for a 6.30 pm start. Tea/coffee and biscuits will be available.

Myself and James attended the meeting earlier. Attendance was quite poor but suspect the cold played part.

Briefly what was talked about

One Richmond half tide gate was fixed during the draw off but they had issues, hence why the do was extended. They have now got the methodology in place so will be ok next year.

New Rowing code has proved a big success.

For the Queens pageant on 3rd June they are putting temporary in river moorings in near Barnes to take all the boats. TAC asked about environmental impacts but were assured there are none as they are just mooring bouys. A water taxi will be in operation probably to Putney Pier.

All mooring around the Olympic period have gone, the PLA will be carefully controlling access, and no doubt the Police etc.

The PLA support the Thames Tunnel but are pressing TW about moving as much as possible by river. A statement is due shortly.

There is a review of fees for houseboats.

Tree management is now being undertaken after 20 years of neglect.

The proposed new stand at Fulham Football club will encroach up to 10m into the river, one of the local sailing clubs has major objections. They ae about to release a document about the concerns, passed on the TAC email address.

A Q&A followed, mainly mooring and boating matters. A rep from RUG tidal tried to insist that it would be better to seperate the rainwater from sewage in London, so not needing the Tunnel. The TAC replied in kind about the costs of digging up every London street, etc. Plus the levels of sewage since June and thanking the PLA for supporting the Tunnel. The gentleman from RUG tidal wanted to chat after as have met him before, he said that 80% of all the sewage comes out of Mogden, needless to say I corrected him. A little research would have gone a long way.

Any of the above on the PLA website

Cheers

Another question asked was: Is the main channel nearby to Oliver,s Ait going to be dredged?
The Chief Harbourmasters reply was: It silts up straight away, so there is no point.
That leaves the question; What is it silting up with?
I think we all know the answer to that one.
Cheers
James
