Went very well mate, cleared the entire spawning channel and some of the backwater. Hard work but worthwhile, saw fish back in the channel flitting about and Steve even spotted a newt. The flow increased after all the debris was taken out. Enjoyed it fellas, thanks for getting involved.

Next task will be adding gravel to a few areas which we will arrange a date for.

Lots of pics up tomorrow Smile

Hard work but a really enjoyable morning, sorry I had to go at lunchtime really.
And thanks for the coffee James!
On my way back the water in the channel had cleared and spotted 3 chub in there.

Within an hour the increased flow from opening up the river had cleared the bottom of silt and had left clean gravel for the fish to spawn on.

For more of the same type of work put your names down for the Hogsmill work lads

http://forum.rivertac.org/t1773-sat-18th-feb-hogsmill-habitat-enhancement#17206

Directly benefits the fish very quickly and you'll feel good about improving a river.

Wish I'd been able to stay to the end, that was quite an effort clearing the other side channel which had silted up to become a marshy bog.
Yikes am I really going that bald :face: ?!

Thanks to all those who got involved, anything going on during the close season, or is there too much of a risk of disrupting spawning?

Spot on James, that is the issue we run into come spring time.

What we will do is always consult with the EA as to whether an area is a spawning site or not. Happened with the Beverley Brook last year and an in river clean up. They were happy that nothing would be affected so we went ahead.

The tree and bank, that will always be before the nesting season starts, so hence the Hogsmill event in a few weeks time

Over the close they will be lots going on including a big Himalayan Balsam bash, pre it flowering.

So lots of opportunity to get involved if anyone wants to, its great improving the river and seeing the lasting affects.

Next up and very shortly will be putting more gravel in at Penton Hook, will get a date up soon. Smile

One thing is for sure, we always have a great laugh doing it and its very social Smile

When that Gravel goes in Dave, afterwards, maybe we can have a little fishing social on the Island, i can only speak for myself, but coming away from there the other day i felt a bit empty, not for the work we done, but it just seemed a shame not to fish such a nice part of the river (loads of Mr Crabtree swims), especially in that condition.
If we could and there are people without weir permits, (me included) maybe the EA could wave it for the day or those with permits could use their buddy system.
just a thought
cheers
james

p.s
there was no swearing on the video because the bloke who filmed it
did,nt have a powerful enough microphone to pick up that bloke at the top of the screen affraid
