I'm not sure exactly where you go to fish it but I suspect that the northumberland river is probably as dead as the Crane now isn't it?

if you are looking for crayfish, lots of them in the Bassinstoke cannel, 10mins in pot, peper, sait, viniger, english mustud, Mmmmmmm,

Robert dont know them myself, think plenty of people experience issues so should get some ideas. I think the Wey suffers quite Badly and possibly the Mole. They are not this far down the Thames, think you are looking way up into the middle reaches.

If it was Mittens, that's easy, thousands in the Thames

not sure if relevant but i know a bloke who used to put nets on the kennet at ufton, few years ago now but it was alive with crayfish and he did ok(financially) out of it.
never heard of many on the lower thames so might be worth have a look on the kennet.
as said before thousands of mitten crabs on the thames!

Read the ZSL studies on Thames mittens - that was partly what the EA based their decision on to allow authorised trapping of them.

got permision to put a trial pod at sunbry and hampton, nothing caught! not even a nibble, tried a variety of baits as well

Wrong time of the year Robert really - the adults will have migrated by now to the estuary and the water's getting down to the temperatures they become inactive.
