Thanks, Oli - you seem to have done your best to make me look like George Cluny;-)

BTW - I know it's a tricky subject, but could that be a sea, rather than brown trout - not just because of it's relatively pale colours, but it also appears quite long & lean for fresh water only fish?

Hi there!

On the 20th of November 2011, River Lane Petersham the Thames Angling Conservancy held a dace fish-off. James Annear, Steve Holmes, John Lessieur, Mike Box, Ed Randall, Matthew Randall, Kieth Collett, Jack Collett and Paul Snell turned up to fish for the dace. It was extremely foggy on that day as I'm sure you all know, it turned out to be a slow morning but as the fog started to clear John Lessieur bagged a 2Ib 12 oz Sea trout. Brilliant! Although the fishing was for dace a 2Ib 12 oz Sea trout was somewhat excepted into the fish-off. Soon after James Annear bagged a 4 ounce dace with them starting to bite a few more were needed to full-fill a good days fishing. Final results were not obtained so if any of you guys have any results please add them on here. Thank you

Oli

It was nice to meet you Steve!

The photo's are called HDR photography where you use a tripod, a cable release and take three exposures. A program called photomatix merges them together and then I brighten or darken them on photoshop with a little sharpness if needed. Smile

Sorry, Oli, I wasn't accusing you of making a mistake, after all the captor himself called it a brown trout, didn't he?

I was just saying that I'd probably have called it a sea trout, for the reasons stated, but with no better chance of being correct than a blind guess. As has been posted elsewhere, accurate differentiation of the two can apparently be very difficult indeed.

Hi All

Not having ever seen, let alone caught a sea trout, perhaps it was one.
I have caught brown trout on our prolific River Pant section at Braintree- some of these have been lighter in colour where they were bred in a trout farm adjacent to our river and were released into the river when the owner was pursued by the tax authorities (allegedly).

The trout I caught Sunday weighed 2lbs 12onz. It was a beautiful fish and to catch a sea trout in the Thames at this stretch must be a million to one chance so Ill regard this as a better catch than a brown trout!

As I have been fishing the Thames for the best part of 47 years I very much doubt I will see this again in my life time!

When I was talking to one of the local spectators on Sunday= a man of about 35 years old- he said when he was a teenager he used to catch a lot of brown trout from this stretch.

There's been lots of trout caught this year John from where you were up to about a mile upstream. I can think of 5 TAC members that have had them this season.

So you never know....get back down there and you might catch an even bigger one Smile

I've read a fair bit recently on various forums about trout type identification, the debate often runs on for pages and pages; What I have learned is that:
  1. There is no actual genetic difference between the two, it just *happens* that one decides to go to sea, another decides it prefers the river. As a result the colouration changes somewhat.
  2. Distinguishing between them can be nigh-on impossible!

PS. Top photo's Oli, thanks!
