cheers Steve

talking to the lock keeper at chertsey lock, very nice person, to see if i can fish it, no was the ansour, reason, to many boats around nothing to do with fishing, no probs on that,

"BUT"

there are some "MINK" knocking around the lock, ooooooooh, I hear you all say, "not mink", not them bird eating, egg snatching, baby duck eating , water vole eating monster, who where let out to freedom by some people who thought they where doing them a favour, but did not think what damage they have done to our native widelife, I will say know more on this delicate subject.

ANOTHER day at crabs island letter picking and cheacking for things that should not be there

Wear LICENCE, I am being told by diffident people, that you do not need a wear licence to fish the main Island, only the small island, i have looked on the web page for the wears, and it said you do, we will have to get this clearifide and sorted,

nice one keith, admin will seek clarification from the EA although john the lockeeper should know

about time you gave the signs a clean m8, I thought they were part of the rubbish

do you think that putting up some of our own signs would help, and if so what wording would be good

Spocked to John Sutton last week, ref the Island, signs going up in Non Queens English for our friends from across the channel, wot i need is a letter in polish, so I can hand it to them, saying, fishing licence and weir licence required and no night fishing, please take all rubbish home

plus

a project for our younger members, a A5 (ish) proforma of a story with photo of a life cycle of a stag beetle, I will then place them wear our logs pills are. Has anyone ever seen a stag beetle grub, and the size of it, this needs somone with a bigger IQ then me and better spelling then me, plus gremmer

Hi Keith

Regarding Penton Hook the fishing area's are outlined in the book. Genrally the island is regarded as one and not the small & large.

Regards Jeff

Top work Cap'n Crab!

Frankly it is the EA's job to put up signage saying that Weir Permit is required, AND maintain the signs in a clean readable condition.

The logic goes like this:
If I don't have a weir permit then I don't have the book that comes with the weir permit telling me where it permits me to fish.
If I don't even know that weir permits exist then I am likely to just go and fish there.

Sure, ignorance of the law might be no excuse - but unless it's policed in the same way parking by ruthless traffic wardens, ignorance will win.

If there is nothing there saying what the rules are, plus what signs are present are so dirty as to be practically unreadable, the message is "You an do what you like here because there is no-one really taking any interest in any rules there might be which are obviously out-of-date". Unfortunately that comes across loud and clear in every language on the planet.

Personally I don't buy it that these EEs can't read English and need everything in their own language, I don't see the French, Germans etc doing that anywhere to the same extent that we do, we bend over backwards in this country to accommodate visitors and cite EU directives left right and centre. They are quite capable of writing a bill when they need paying and demanding various public services when they need them. If you choose to live in a country you learn their customs and you learn their language, if you don't do that you can expect to fall foul of the laws. We are lazy at enforcement and far too liberal at making excuses, we use the political correctness argument about causing offence when in fact it is just bloody laziness. Rant over! Evil or Very Mad

Spot.on.

Agree with all of that....and yep, putting signs up and their maintenance is the EA's job.

Isn't it also the lockkeeper's job to patrol his island to make sure no night fishing is going on? He lives on site after all...

thanks for all input people, just one thing i forgot, on small island i found a new area that has been made, far right hand corner, and some duck feathers, on talking to a fisher-person he had seen two non English people trying to entice docks towards them, on main island, then stopped when they saw him, must remember to take note book and pen with me Embarassed

same old same old problems, same old responses, we pay our money where's the service

the lockeeper is unable to visit the island, because of health and safety, no stab vest, cant go alone etc etc

surely us putting up some signs is better than nothing, irrespective of whose responsibility, otherwise we may as well not keep the banks clean, attend to pollution, notch weirs, clean spawning channel etc etc etc
its always someone elses responsibility

Fair enough completely understandable.

So has he organised for his EA colleagues in the enforcement team to regularly patrol at night what is clearly a trouble spot?

(That's rhetorical mate...I know it's not down to you...I'm just making the point it's down to the EA enforcement to sort this out. It is their land after all...)

The headcount they have in enforcement is ridiculously low.

m8, its cyclical, not enough staff, not enough available out of normal working hours, get them increased and working out of normal working hours, increase the costs, prosecute more and lose more money as the fines go to the treasury

its a lose lose situation, increase patrols/bailiffs, increase costs, so reduce fisheries staff to compensate, then seek bio-diversity employees to replace them, get financial assistance elsewhere as its bio diversity and in 20 years it will be EA bio diversity not fisheries

this aint scare mongering, its already happening

..despite the efforts of those who care, the signs obviously still cause a problem to the litter louts - maybe they need to be re-worded or something....i dunno Evil or Very Mad
I fished a little known and secret pool in the midlands last sunday - not many anglers go there but I was amazed at the amount of discarded line, shot and hooks lying around - stick it in the bin, or take it home. . . is it really that difficult?
Wish I lived nearer the Thames - when I lived in London I spent many a happy day on the banks - keep up the good work guys - my support as always Very Happy
