willie returned the chubb because of wearing gloves the chubb was tricky to hold. i saw the chubb and thought split fins and damaged scales would be what you would expect from the tide overflow however it was in perfect condition.

Mini Ha Ha, I must admit I was thinking Longfellow, Hiawatha etc until I was trying to explain to the trouble and strife why I spent the morning standing in ooze and getting wet! She understood the fact that I felt good about it but not much else.

Strange name I said, don’t know why they should have named a Thames backwater after a Squaw. She laughed and reminded me that a Ha Ha was an old ditch and fencing system used to keep deer out. As it’s Old Deer Park, I assume that it was to keep them in.

Am I the only idiot?

Not sure that I want to hear the answer!

Stu....your missus has answered the mystery why it's called Mini Haha. That's got to be the reason.

So much for all our other theories Embarassed Razz

Hopefully we will be in the proper printed one as well later in the week.
Note that you can leave comments beneath this story....only need 5 to bump it up the top of the "Most Comments" list.

NOTE: when you register to leave a comment it asks for your "Postcode / Location" and claims that "...this will not be published..." - but it will be, my postcode appeared right there alongside my comments, so I asked them to remove it. Just enter the name of your town instead of your postcode.
Or maybe see if it will let you enter "rivertac.org" as your town. Razz

It was everyone turning up that cleaned it up, emailing a newspaper is easy once you have a contact there. Top work everyone.

Matthew and me fished it this afternoon, had 3 small Dace and a Roach from the traffic cone chub swim.

While we were fishing 3 teenagers turned up and started throwing stones in just upstream of our swim, seemed like they were trying to intimidate us. A dog walker came along and they cleared off fortunately. The area under the bridge was strewn with rubbish again, a dog walker told us that about 15 teenagers were drinking under the road bridge last night. We took away a very full supermarket bag of cans and bottles.

Matthew spotted another wheel in the haha the other day so we returned this morning with a bin liner and gaff - removed a tyreless car wheel, traffic cone base and collected a bin liner full of bottles, cans and other rubbish. Removed about another 3 bin liners full of stinking muddy rubbish, sleeping bags, clothing, plastic bags, bits of carpet and a dumped bag of rubbish. Didn't have strong enough bin liners with us to collect it so have had to leave most of it on the banks to dry out a bit. Returned home quite a lot filthier than expected!

Yesterday we finally found written evidence of the name of the place. The inscription reads something like:
Quote :
This little stream known as the Mini Ha Ha was restored by JED and TBE 1986-9 RMSCC

Further downstream a large tree has recently fallen, bridging it to provide an alternative back entrance to Kew Gardens:

There's a lot of Himalayan Balsam on both banks all the way from the lock to Kew. The small area we tackled has grown back to 8' or more:
